A clear, step-by-step checklist of what Pakistani students usually need to study in Germany — academic eligibility, language tests, documents, finances and the German student visa. Prepared by UniBridge, a study-in-Germany consultant in Wazirabad, using official DAAD, university and German Missions sources.
Requirements vary by university, programme and individual case. Always confirm the latest rules on the official websites linked below.
Quick checklist
The 7 core requirements at a glance
1. Academic eligibility
A recognised qualification that matches your chosen programme.
2. Language proof
IELTS/TOEFL for English-taught or TestDaF/DSH/Goethe for German-taught programmes.
3. Attested documents
HEC/IBCC-attested degrees and transcripts, passport, CV and motivation letter.
4. Admission letter
Applied directly or through uni-assist, depending on the university.
5. Proof of finances
Usually a German blocked account covering living costs for one year.
6. Health insurance
Valid insurance for the visa and enrolment in Germany.
7. Student visa
A national (D) visa from the German Embassy Islamabad or Consulate General Karachi.
1. Academic requirements
For a bachelor’s degree
Pakistani Matric + Intermediate (FSc, ICS, I.Com, FA) is generally not treated as equivalent to the German Abitur. Students usually qualify through one of these routes:
- Successful completion of one or two years of a related bachelor’s programme at a recognised Pakistani university
- A one-year foundation course (Studienkolleg) followed by the assessment exam (Feststellungsprüfung)
- A-Level students may qualify directly depending on subjects and grades
For a master’s degree
- A recognised bachelor’s degree in a closely related subject — usually 16 years of education (four-year BS or equivalent)
- Grades that meet the programme’s minimum; some universities convert your CGPA to the German scale
- Sometimes GRE/GMAT, work experience, a portfolio or specific subject credits
Check recognition and admission rules in the DAAD admission requirements database ↗.
2. Language requirements
- English-taught programmes: commonly IELTS Academic (often 6.0–6.5 overall) or TOEFL iBT. Some accept other proof, such as a medium-of-instruction letter.
- German-taught programmes: usually German at B2–C1 level, proven by TestDaF, DSH, Goethe-Zertifikat or telc.
- Basic German (A1–A2) is not always required for admission but helps with daily life and part-time jobs.
Each programme sets its own scores — never assume one rule applies everywhere.
3. Documents Pakistani students usually need
- Valid passport
- Matric and Intermediate certificates (IBCC attestation where requested)
- Bachelor’s/master’s degree and transcripts (HEC-attested)
- Language test certificate (IELTS/TOEFL or German)
- CV in European format and a programme-specific motivation letter
- Letters of recommendation (for many master’s programmes)
- uni-assist VPD or evaluation, if the university requires it
Many universities use uni-assist ↗ to check international applications.
4. Tuition fees and living costs
- Most public universities charge no tuition for most programmes, but all charge a semester contribution (commonly a few hundred euros), often including a public transport ticket.
- Exceptions exist: universities in Baden-Württemberg and some others, such as TU Munich, charge tuition to non-EU students.
- Plan for rent, food, health insurance, books and travel — costs vary a lot between cities like Munich and smaller university towns.
5. Blocked account and proof of finances
For the student visa you normally prove funds for one year of living costs through a German blocked account (Sperrkonto), a scholarship or a formal sponsorship. The required amount is set by German authorities and updated periodically — always confirm the current figure with the German Missions in Pakistan before transferring money.
6. German student visa from Pakistan
- Apply for a national (D) student visa at the German Embassy Islamabad or the Consulate General Karachi, following the instructions and online application process on their website.
- Typical documents: admission letter, blocked account confirmation, health insurance, attested education documents, language certificate, CV, motivation letter and passport photos.
- Appointment and processing times can be long — start as soon as you receive admission.

7. Typical timeline
- 9–12 months before: research programmes, prepare your language test, start attestation
- 6–9 months before: apply (winter-semester deadlines often fall between January and July; summer-semester deadlines often between September and January)
- 3–6 months before: admission letter, blocked account, health insurance, visa appointment
- 1–2 months before: accommodation, travel and enrolment
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What are the basic requirements to study in Germany from Pakistan?
A recognised qualification that matches the programme, proof of English or German, attested academic documents, proof of finances (usually a blocked account), health insurance and a German national student visa.
Can I get admission in a German bachelor’s after FSc or A-Levels?
Pakistani intermediate (FSc/ICS/I.Com) usually does not give direct entry. Common routes are a Studienkolleg foundation year or one to two years of successful university study in Pakistan. A-Level students may qualify depending on subjects and grades. Check your case in the DAAD admission database.
Is IELTS compulsory for Germany?
Not always. Most English-taught programmes ask for IELTS or TOEFL, but some accept other proof of English. German-taught programmes need German proof instead. Always follow the specific programme’s rules.
How much money do I need for a German student visa?
You must prove you can cover living costs, usually with a blocked account. The required amount is set by German authorities and updated periodically, so check the current figure on the German Missions in Pakistan website before you deposit.
Do I need HEC attestation for Germany?
Universities and the German Embassy commonly ask for degrees and transcripts attested by HEC (and IBCC for matric/intermediate). Check the document list of your programme and the embassy checklist.
Can a consultant guarantee a German visa?
No. Visa decisions are made only by the German Embassy or Consulate. Avoid anyone who promises guaranteed admission or visas.
